Getting started
To use lecture capture streaming content, QuickTime (version 7 or higher recommended) must be installed:
Ensuring QuickTime is configured correctly
Check that QuickTime is configured for streaming.
If your streaming check failed, follow the instructions below:
To make sure that QuickTime is setup correctly for use with lecture capture, put all streaming settings to automatic - this lets QuickTime find the best settings for your computer and internet connection.
To check that all QuickTime settings are automatic, do the following:
On Windows XP:
- Access the Control Panel from the Task Bar by selecting Start > Settings > Control Panel.
- Select QuickTime from the Control Panel window.
- Select the Streaming tab.
- Select Automatic from the Streaming Speed drop-down menu.
- Select the Advanced tab - ensure that Automatic is selected in Streaming Transport Setup.
- Click OK to quit QuickTime preferences.
On Macintosh OS X 10.3 or higher:
- Access System Preferences by clicking the Apple menu (located in the upper left corner) and selecting System Preferences.
- Select QuickTime from the Internet & Network section of System Preferences.
- Select Streaming from the toolbar.
- Select Automatic from the Streaming Speed drop-down menu.
- Select Advanced from the toolbar - ensure that Automatic is selected in the Transport Setup drop-down menu.
- Quit System Preferences.
I have followed these steps but streaming still does not work. What do I do now?
The automatic option works for most people. If you are seeing a partial image of the QuickTime symbol or getting a continuous "Negotiating" message, you may have to manually set the Transport preferences
- Open the QuickTime player.
- Choose the Edit drop-down menu item.
- Select Preferences.
- Select QuickTime Preference.
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- In the Streaming section, change Transport Setup to Custom. This opens a small streaming transport dialog box.
- Set Transport Protocol to HTTP.
- Set Port ID to Custom and type 554 in the empty box alongside Custom.
- Click on OK and Apply.
Neither automatic nor manual settings have worked. What do I do now?
If you have tried both automatic and manual QuickTime streaming options and still cannot view or listen to the stream, a firewall may be blocking your access.
QuickTime operates on port 554 for RTSP/TCP data and ports 6970 to 6999 for RTP/UTP data.
For QuickTime to access the lecture capture servers, these ports must be accessible by QuickTime. To enable QuickTime access through the firewall, consult your firewall documentation. Some links to common firewall software documentation are listed below:
