Learning Environments Teaching & research services for staff

Logging on to computers in shared learning spaces

Learning Environments have implemented a more secure PC desktop environment, effective August 2009, to ensure compliance with IT Security guidelines.

This means:

  1. By default you will be logged into the "Guest" account - you will only be able to access University of Melbourne web pages and all files will be read-only.
  2. To get full access to the Internet and installed software, staff (and/or students) must press CTRL+ALT+Delete and log in using their University email username and password.
  3. Staff (and/or students) need to log-on to PCs with their University email username and password, to get full access to the Internet and installed software.
  4. Staff (and/or students) need to place any PowerPoint and other files into the desktop documents folder.
  5. Staff (and/or students) need to log-off the PC at the end of teaching sessions.
  6. Any files left on the PC, or programs installed by users during their computing session, will be automatically deleted when that user logs out or when the PC is restarted or shutdown. Files placed in the desktop documents folder will not be deleted.

All faculty general managers, academic heads of departments, and departmental managers were formally advised of this change via official circular on 13 July 2009. Learning Environments will implement a more secure Mac desktop environment, effective from the start of semester one, 2010, to ensure compliance with IT Security guidelines.
